Symposium - Automated Reports  [24/6/2008 10:43:41]

Couple of questions as I am new to using Symposium...

Does any one know if call reports can be automated with Symposium to save to a file location each day, if so how?

Where can I get a manual for call reporting and report building from Symposium....

Unfortunately am not getting much luck from Symposium support on this.

Many thanks in advance...

Automating Symp Reports  [24/6/2008 11:52:51]

David.

Once you've set up and saved a report
in the 'Historical reports' section.

1) Click on SCHEDULE and select when you want it to go.

2) Below SCHEDULE is 'Output Options' this gives you a list of:

i) Printers to schedule to.
or
ii) Output file format and location. If
you select the 'Save under a different file name each time'
option IIRC it aapends a date / time stamp to the report name.

Automating Symp Reports   [24/6/2008 12:13:23]

As Dave says for the setup. You'll need to make sure that your IT guys have enabled the option.

Which version of Symposium are you running?

If you e-mail me via the website in my bio page I may have something that will help you.

Also  [25/6/2008 10:00:31]

make sure that your Symposium server has a printer driver installed on it or the scheduling feature will not work.

Symposium - Automated Reports ( Database )  [25/6/2008 15:22:07]

Also do you know what database Symposium sits on, for example is it Oracle

Symp Databases  [25/6/2008 17:33:47]

I think it's optional.

Ours is Orrable. Although I've seen SQL Swerver as well.

I'm not sure if anyone runs it in Informix.

You *SHOULD* be able to ODBC into it fairly easily
provided your IT dept allows the connection.

However.......

There can be err... issues running connections
into the live Db (So I'm told) so be careful.

As Paul says the printer drivers do need to be installed
to enable the scheduling options (Even for dump to file for some reason).

Again be careful which printer you pick as it's a pain in the A**
to change it later.

Good luck.

Symposium and Powerplay.  [25/6/2008 18:24:27]

Ouch,

That's going to be hard!

Using the underlying Impromptu queries
may be a better way to go rather than the drill down in powerplay.

Either way you're going to need a CAT built and going the Impromptu route
is going to give you a lot more flexability than the PPlay cube.

Also if you change the underlying structure at any point it's FAR FAR
easier to edit a query than rebuild ALL the cube associations.

Personally I'm not sure how good an idea it is!!!

Hope it helps, setting up the CAT shouldn't be too
difficult as the Tbl joins will be the same as in the underlying
Db so it's a matter of pick and go.

Regards

Symposium Manual  [26/6/2008 13:03:38]

David,

As I said, if you e-mail me I can send you a pdf that you may find useful.

As for connecting Symposium to PowerPlay..... You should be able to ODBC to the tables (careful about connecting to the live server as it can slow down a lot). Main problem I have with PowerPlay is the horrifically slow refresh rate on a large cube.

Personally I would take a copy of the tables and use Cognos8. This has more flexibility than PowerPlay and Impromptu (in many ways it combines their features and adds a few more) and is "thin client" alowing faster access speeds as the processing is done on the server and not over the network.

Symposium Database  [26/6/2008 13:53:07]

Symposium, I am afraid sits on a Sybase database. This is a SQL like database but is NOT SQL.

Sorry, this is not optional. You cannot choose what database platform you install to. You can though use ODBC drivers to get to the raw data for analysis.

Getting Frustrated!!  [26/6/2008 17:54:47]

I'm working with David at Thomas Cook - still trying to get Symposium to run reports overnight for us!! I have spoken to our IT helpdesk and they have confirmed that there are definitely print drivers installed on the network / server - however the reports STILL are not working!!
Is it possibly anything to do with the fact that we are accessing the system via a remote desktop?? Could this affect what the system will allow us to do?

P.S - Please be gentle with me - I don't understand all of the technical stuff! Laymans please!!

Thanks

Clare

Symposium scheduling. CC6  [26/6/2008 19:55:33]

David / Claire.

Which version of the web client are you using?

CC6 is VERY ActiveX dependant and
I'm not sure how remote desktop friendly that is.

Given ActiveX allows the connection are the relevant X controls
installed on the target PC for the CC6 operations?

ie: can you schedule normally on the target PC?

Just an idea.

Careful..   [27/6/2008 09:18:06]

If you are accessing the Symposium/CC6 server using remote desktop, then you MUST ensure that you are in CONSOLE mode. Otherwise a new session starts up and the 'true' symposium will not see the schedule you are creating.

Just ensure that your remote desktop shortcut has /CONSOLE at the end.
